Through these challenging times we are facing as a Country, we all look for some comfort. It seems that many of us can find comfort in our Traditions. These can be the simpliest of things that we may have never given a second thought to when we were growing up. Taking for granted the importance of each
ritual, such as the entire family gathered at the dinner table on a daily basis. Knowing that our being there wasn't negotiable, we were expected to be at our place. Simple things such as knowing Tuesdays were laundry day, Saturday morning was grocery shopping and Saturday evenings were spent visiting our friends and school functions. Sundays were the day to go to Church and then look forward to either a leisurely drive and if we had been good, we would be able to stop at McDonalds. For in those days, McDonalds was not a place we would visit daily. So we looked forward to those 'Special treats'.
Long before the video games and computers, cell phones and the such, we spent time at the libraries or maybe playing board games with our friends. It was those little routines that helped us feel secure and as if we knew what we could expect.
Maybe we need to really look back at the good traditions and rituals and incorporate some of them into our lives today.
Now, I'm not saying everything from our past was glorious and not imperfect, I am just saying we seem to have become undone, as if we are all alone on this journey through life.
Can you remember the last time you actually sat leisurely at the dinner table talking with your children? When was the last time, you did something nice for your neighbor, or donated to a worthy cause? How about the last time you actually went to your local library and spent some time. Sure computers are great and we have a wealth of information at our fingertips, but it will never be the same as a good book.
Let's all try to look back into our earlier years and bring what Traditions & Rituals that enhanced our lives, into the lives of our children & our community. As the Holiday Season approaches, let's set our finest table, dress up for dinner and
truly enjoy the conversations over dessert & coffee. Remember to help those in need too. While times may be challenging, we all can share something with someone in need. If everyone does
alittle, it will mean alot to the person who needs a hand up!
Better times are coming and we may have just needed a wake-up call to remember what is truly important.
